Creating a WordPress Theme

Here at Web Juice we have spent a lot of time working on WordPress themes specific to a clients brief. This gave us a wide breadth of knowledge of all the useful little functions and workarounds to create a really versatile website as such we decided…Why not make our own theme! Previously the way we worked with smaller projects was to find a theme from one of the many outlets such as Themeforest, Theme Monster,Mojo Themes, etc. and tweaking to the clients requirement. This has benefits in speeding up initial development time as you have an 80% complete website that “just” needs a little bit of editing.  Unfortunately in the web world there is no such thing as “just” as it frequently became a nightmare of unpicking poor code or understanding the complex structure the theme was built using.  This meant that the last 20% usually took 3 times longer than it did to decide upon a theme we liked install it and create content. This had to stop! We set about in late 2014 building our own multipurpose theme that could hopefully speed up the development process and give the client a flexible easy to update website.  Therefore our plan was simple – go multipurpose.

What is a multipurpose WordPress theme?

A multipurpose wordpress theme is put simply suitable for a lot of different purposes so We wanted to create a theme that:
  • Was a good portfolio based theme for people to showcase their projects or works
  • Incorporated woo commerce functionality
  • Was completely responsive
  • Allowed customers to create as many different looking pages as they liked
  • Fully flexible
This process took a while and went through multiple stages of development (of which we are still not even done!) to get to a finished product that we could either sell as a standalone piece or use internally as a development platform. Putty Theme was born! putty-mojo Built using the popular bootstrap framework Putty Theme is a fully responsive, fully flexible theme for WordPress. Boasting a variety of customisable options including:
  • Simple shortcode builder integrated into the visual composer:
    • Tabs
    • Accordions
    • Blockquotes
    • Buttons in 4 sizes and unlimited colours
    • Card Flip – Animate your content with a card flip
    • Animations
    • Embed Videos
    • Recent Posts
    • Filterable Portfolio tiles
    • Page Sections
    • Animations
  • Unlimited colors and Layouts: You can change whole color and look of your website in just a few clicks. Choose your colors from a color picker and away you go
  • 6 layout options – whole site and page templates
    • Full width
    • Left sidebar
    • Right sidebar
